Preparing to have a healthy baby, or preconception care, is an activity that helps intending parents to recognise and reduce health risks to future pregnancies before conception for the maximum benefit. As early as 1991, health care leaders in the United States had advised that preconception care be made available to all prospective parents because health in pregnancy depends on health status prior to pregnancy, and that attention to the patient’s health needs before conception was known to result in improved outcomes. The types of activities constituting preconception care varies with the health setting, and generally include:
